Auxiliary Verb Venn Diagram
I am You We They are were
He She It does is has do have was did had will
As you can see in the diagram above, each group of subjects: I , You/We/They , and He/She/It , has 7 auxiliary verbs for all the 12 tenses.
I - am , was , do , have , did , had , will .
'am ' is only used with I;
'do ' and 'have ' are shared with You/We/They; 'was ' is shared with He/She/It.
You/We/They - are , were , do , have , did , had , will .
Remember that 'are ' and 'were ' both end with '-re '.
He/She/It - is , was , does , has , did , had , will .
Remember that 'is ', 'was ', 'has ', and 'does ' all end with '-s '.
All the subject pronouns: I/You/We/They/He/She/It use 'did ', 'had ', and 'will '.
Which auxiliary verbs do I need for each tense?
Let's start with the easy ones to remember:
Perfect - the verb 'to have':
'have ' and 'has ' in present ;
'had ' in past ;
'will have ' in future .
Continuous - the verb 'to be':
'am ', 'are ', and 'is ' in present ;
'was ', 'were ' in past ;
'will be ' in future .
Perfect Continuous - this is a combination of 'to have' and the past participle of 'to be' - 'been':
'have been ' and 'has been ' in present ;
'had been ' in past ;
'will have been ' in future .
Lastly, the most difficult tense for students, Simple , is actually a bit complex:
'do ' and 'does ' in present , but only in interrogative (int.) and negative (neg.);
'did ' in past , but again, only in interrogative (int.) and negative (neg.);
'will ' in future in all three: interrogative (int.), negative (neg.), and affirmative (aff.).
Remember that there are only two cases in which we do not need an auxiliary verb:
Present Simple affirmative and Past Simple affirmative
